![]() ![]() ![]() Either way, a portion of, “They are today” by Gabriela Mistral has been at the back of my educational philosophies for the last decade. It had such immediacy and insight into children, and perhaps it was compounded by my experience working with children in Kenya. Though I don’t remember her name, I do remember a quote that she referenced. A student of the philosophies of Maria Montessori, she trained teachers, cared for children, and was already trying to raise money from her home community to accomplish her dream of starting a school near the capital city of Nairobi for Kenyan girls orphaned by AIDS. In a dusty village in Kenya, I met a 20-year-old student who was committed to changing Kenyan education. I remember her smile, her tiny stature, which stood in contrast to her passion. Long tongues licking lettuce from our hands, our buckets, even our lips. ![]()
